Agbiz Grain is currently liaising with various
industry role-players to gather information regarding rail volumes used by its
members. Industry bodies consulted include Grain SA, SACOTA, the National
Chamber of Milling (NCM) and the Animal Feed Manufacturers Association (AFMA).
Agbiz Grain received ‘in-scope’ confirmation from the Competition Commission in
December last year to proceed with the gathering of information. This came
after Transnet in 2025 announced its intention to split Transnet Freight Rail
into two entities, the Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager (TRIM) and TRF, which will function as an independent network operator.
TRIM representatives met with Agbiz, Sacota, and Agbiz
Grain in July last year to discuss industry’s buy-in in the process and provide
more information regarding the opportunity for value chain role-players to bid
for slots and operate branch lines effectively. The goal of the
information-gathering exercise by Agbiz Grain is to map the potential flow of
grain from Agbiz Grain member silos to mills, feed mills, and harbours using
interactive maps. This will assist in identifying viable rail lines as part of
the response to the request for interest (RFI) for the so-called B-lines of the
South African railway network. – Agbiz Grain
